Ornithological Field Notes Summer 1999: Directions

Big Island W.A. Bell's Vireo by Victor W. Fazio III

6 June 1999; 11:40 am

The bird is occupying shrubbery along the railroad bed paralleling Rt. 95 at a point just east of where the Northern Wheatear could be found last fall.

One mile west of Rt. 203 along Rt. 95 west out of Marion (Marion County) find the parking area on the north side of the road. From there walk south across the tracks into UNITS GH of Big Island W.A. You will see a vehicle track heading south. To your immediately left is a brush-hogged path running east along the edge of vegetation abutting the railroad bed. Go 100 yards. From this point and for another 150 yards (to about 50 yards past a willow thicket on your right) is where the bird has appeared.

Lawrence's Warbler - male - singing Blue-winged Warbler song - on Wetmore Rd. by Jim Heflich

31 May - 6 June, 1999

This bird has a wide black upper breast band, but not a black throat. The black line through the eye is only a little wider than that of the Blue-winged Warbler - considerably narrower than illustrated in NGS. From the side, it looks like a Blue-winged Warbler - need to see it face-on for the breast band. It is a very bright yellow bird!

While Blue-winged Warblers are abundant on all the nearby roads, this seems to be the only singing territorial male on this stretch of Wetmore Rd. - immediately North of BoBey Rd. The warbler frequents a low open field with just a few shrubby bushes, as well as the edge of the bordering woods, all on the north or west side of Wetmore Rd. It does cross the road to the more brushy South or East side of Wetmore Rd. Today it perched on electric lines along the road right in front of us.

This field is marked by a small green shed in the middle, and a silver petroleum storage tank just North of BoBey Rd. Neither Wetmore or BoBey are identified in DeLorme - but are in Monroe Township (A/B - 6/7). Wetmore Rd. runs Southwest from Hatch Corners Rd. to Rt. 84 in Kellogsville. All these roads do have street signs with their names.
