Ohio's Rare Birds

This list corresponds closely with the Ohio Bird Record Committee's documentation review list. However, this list has two additional species; Clay-colored Sparrow and Eurasian Wigeon. With these additions, the list represents those species which have NOT been recorded annually in the most recent 10 year period (1990-1999). A PDF version of the complete Ohio list will be made available shortly, highlighting these species, thereby identifying the "CORE"* 289 species which have been recorded annually during that period. This listed was created by myself (V.Fazio) and vetted by Robert Harlan.

Rules: Use of the toll-free number should be restricted to reporting species on the following list or otherwise first-state records should there be a reasonable expectation the bird may remain in the area for subsequent observation by fellow birders. This toll-free service does not substitute existing phone-trees or online communication services. It is only intended as another tool by which Ohio's birding community communicates breaking news of rare birds, thereby facilitating the thorough documentation of a record by as many observers as possible.

* For those of you who are listers within the framework of the American Birding Association set of rules, in the future the core listing will be substituted for the current 50% rule for calculating the threshhold for state lists. This core listing will be updated with each passing year. In the near future, Clay-colored Sparrow and Eurasian Wigeon will likely be added to the Core list. Not too far beyond that likely additions include Rufous Hummingbird, Glossy Ibis, and Ross's Goose. More intense coverage of appropriate habitat at the appropriate times may find Le Conte's Sparrow and Parasitic Jaeger are annual species. The most likely current Core species to be dropped from the list is Western Meadowlark (only one record in 1999 and one record in 2000).
