just a bit farther N from these parks along Rt. 58 on the east side of Lawtonka, there is an inconspicuous turn-off toward Meers. Turning left, the road quickly snakes to the right again. But a sharp left will dead end at the Kiowa Methodist camp. Before you take that sharp left, a battered sign to the camp sits before you at the jct. of these roads. There you will see an old rusted water tank in a too-small paddock with a couple of forlorn horses. At the base of the tank is an unpromising puddle of what was mostly frozen water this morning. Yet the birdlife here quickly attracted my attention. I was able to park my vehicle up against the fence, and susng it as a blind, photographed all but one of the following species over the course of 30 minutes as they came in to this watering hole.

Downy Woodpecker - 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 2
American Robin - 15
Eastern Bluebird - 18
Northern Mockingbird - 4
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 11
American Tree Sparrow - 1
Lark Sparrow - 1
Fox Sparrow - 1
Harris's Sparrow - 32
White-crowned Sparrow - 11
Dark-eyed Junco - 9
Red-winged Blackbird - 5
Northern Cardinal - 18
American Goldfinch - 1
House Finch - 12
House Sparrow - 9

most of these counts are maxima of what appeared at one time; the cardinals and Harris's Sparrows obliged by sitting up in an opposing fence row to be counted. Nothing really unusual here, but local birders may find it fun to study these species at leisure as though watching a bird feeder.

cheers
