V.W. Fazio III - I now grant that this bird does not appear to be dark enough for a typical Greenland, flavifrons. My original suspicions were raised by the bright orange-yellow bill, the color involving the bill entirely and uniformly, and the length of the bill which appears proportional to that of a "Greater" Canada Goose {the race present nearby in the photos above}. These are features I have difficulty resolving with the typical Greater White-fronted Goose {example from Castalia in October 1995}. I am aware of the argument for variable interpretation of the orange vs pink vs pinkish-orange bills in typical American birds however this individual still stands out from my experience.
Macklin Smith - "I drove to Castalia with some scepticism, partly because of Kaufmann's article, but as soon as I saw the Greater White-fronted Goose I was pretty blown away by its evident difference".
John Sniveley - "orange bill and well defined barring on the underside. The white facial band behind the bill, light spot at the end of the bill and orange legs were all plainly visible".
